Character Math High School Proposal
Targeted Grades & Approach
Character Math focuses on Special Education, 9th Grade, and 11th Grade students:
-
9th Grade: Provides students with a fresh start to learn Math Facts effectively, which supports understanding in higher-level subjects, including Chemistry and other sciences. Mastery of the Numerical Ladder simplifies complex calculations, preparing students for the technology-driven working world.
-
11th Grade: Reinforces foundational skills to ensure success in Advanced Math and High School Science, giving students the tools to excel academically.
-
Special Education: Supports students with unique mathematical needs, providing a structured, accessible pathway to understanding numbers.
Teacher Implementation:
Selected teachers from these grades attend a 3-hour Professional Development Training (P.D.T.), equipping them to implement the Character Math program confidently. After training, teachers return to their classrooms to guide students in using the Numerical Ladder independently.
Curriculum Strategy
The Character Math program centers on the Numerical Ladder, a newly designed Numbers Chart that helps students visualize patterns and understand number relationships. Each number has a distinct structure and interacts strategically with its counterparts, enabling students to multiply and divide independently.
Character Math acts as “The Bridge Between The Tortoise & The Hare”, giving struggling students the tools to catch up to their peers by building confidence and comprehension through pattern recognition.
Implementation:
-
Daily Practice: 15–20 minutes per day for 10 school days
-
Ongoing Application: Students continue using Character Math throughout the school year, applying the skills to all math tasks.
Outcome:
Every student can progress in math without failing or being left behind, as the program builds a strong conceptual understanding of numbers and eliminates common barriers to success.
Project Phases
Phase 1: Learning number patterns and familiarizing students with pattern structures.
Phase 2: Exercising patterns using the Numerical Ladder and progressing through advanced stages of the program, reinforcing skills through memory assessment and applied practice.
